The Second Step

You've taken the first step and formed your accountability team, now it's time fortify your defenses and restrict your access to porn. Do NOT allow the Devil to convince you to skip this step.

It’s Friday — and that means it’s time for your Weekly Dispatch. I’m glad you’re here again, committed to walking this path toward freedom. For this next step, you will need your Accountability Partner by your side and take real, measured action to remove access to pornography in your life.

This step is practical. It’s real. And it’s one of the most effective ways to reduce temptation and begin rewiring your mind, which has been corrupted through years of depravity.

Why Removing Access Matters

For some of you, installing software on your phone will not be enough. After the FBI raid and the confiscation of all my devices, I decided to purchase a flip phone for communication. No longer carrying a porn machine in my pocket was a good and necessary step for me at that time, and that flip phone made phone calls just like a smartphone, what a miracle!

This doesn't have to be a permanent step; my current phone is an iPhone 16. But during that season of sickness in my mind, it was vital. I recommend sitting down privately with your accountability partner to talk this out and decide what's best for you.

Locking Down Your Devices

Every device you own that connects to the internet can be an access point for pornography — and every one of them needs to be secured.

Here’s the approach:

1. Use Accountability Software where you can

Accountability software is a digital tool designed to help you eliminate access to pornography and other harmful content by creating transparency around your online activity. Unlike simple filters that just block websites, accountability software monitors screen activity and sends regular reports to your accountability partner, making it much harder to hide relapse or risky behavior. Many programs use advanced technology to detect explicit content, flag concerning searches, and provide real-time alerts. The goal isn’t surveillance for punishment — it’s transparency for transformation. By removing secrecy and adding trusted oversight, accountability software helps break the isolation that fuels porn addiction and supports long-term freedom through honesty and shared responsibility.

Here are 5 of the most popular programs, with Covenant Eyes being the one I use in my life:

  • Ever Accountable

  • Canopy

Primarily a smart filtering system with optional accountability features.

  • Real-time content filtering

  • Strong parental control features

  • Great for families

  • Fortify

More recovery-focused than pure monitoring.

  • Combines accountability with structured recovery training

  • Educational modules

  • Community support

Best for: Men who want a recovery program alongside accountability tools.

Important: Install the software on every device you use — phones, tablets, laptops, and desktops.

2. SmartTVs and Gaming Consoles Need Extra Care

Most accountability and filtering software doesn’t work on TVs or gaming systems. This means you need to guard those devices with parental locks and third-party restrictions.

Set strong PIN codes on:

  • Smart TVs

  • Gaming consoles

  • Streaming devices

And here’s a key tip: You should not know these PIN codes.
Give them to your accountability partner or your spouse — not you. This eliminates the temptation to bypass the restrictions in moments of weakness.

3. Do It With a Trusted Accountability Partner

Locking down your tech isn’t a solo job. You should set up these safeguards with your accountability partner, so they can verify everything is correctly configured and there’s no loophole left open.

Your partner should have the codes (not you), regularly check reports, and help you stay committed. And while your wife is a precious partner in your life, she is often not the best choice for accountability reporting, because she shouldn’t carry the burden of seeing every slip — especially early in your recovery. She needs space to heal. You need someone who can walk with you through this process without being emotionally crushed by the data.

A good accountability partner is:

  • trustworthy

  • supportive

  • timely in reviewing reports

  • committed to your freedom

  • not burdened by marital pain if you have setbacks

The Goal Isn’t Control — It’s Transformation

Putting safeguards in place is an act of humility, not weakness. Temptation thrives in secrecy. Transparency dismantles it.

Remember: these tools don’t save you. Jesus does. But these tools help you remove the “easy” exposures so you can focus on transformation of your heart and mind.

A Good Encouraging Scripture (NKJV)

Let this truth settle in your heart:

“You shall walk in the ways of the good, and keep the paths of the righteous. For the upright shall dwell in the land, and the blameless shall remain in it.” Proverbs 2:20–21 (NKJV)

And also this promise:

“Blessed is the man who endures temptation; for when he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him.” James 1:12 (NKJV)

God is cheering for you. Not because of your perfection — but because He sees your heart turning toward Him.
